How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" (With Examples)

⏱ 4 min read · September 30, 2026

Most interviews open with this question, and the first minute shapes a big part of the impression you make. Many people tell their life story starting from school; the right approach is a short, structured answer that connects you to the job.

The 3-part method: present, past, future

  1. Present: who you are and what you do now (one or two sentences).
  2. Past: the experience or achievement that proves you fit (two sentences).
  3. Future: why you want this role at this company (one sentence).

Keep the whole answer to about one to one and a half minutes, roughly 100–150 words.

Example for an experienced candidate (sales)

I'm a sales executive with five years of B2B experience, currently managing around 70 corporate clients at a telecom company. Last year I exceeded my annual target by 28%, mainly by building long-term relationships and upselling new services. I'm now looking for a role where I can manage bigger accounts, and your company's growth in the SME market is exactly the kind of challenge I'm excited about.

Example for a fresh graduate

I recently graduated with a degree in Business Administration. During my studies I completed a marketing internship, where I analyzed sales data and helped organize in-store promotions, and I led a team of 12 students in a university project competition. I enjoy working with numbers and people, so this junior marketing role is a great fit, and I'd love to learn and grow with your team.

Mistakes to avoid

How to practise

Write your answer as bullet points rather than full sentences, then say it out loud in front of a mirror or record it on your phone 3–4 times. Trim anything that runs long and make sure your last sentence links you to the job.
