How to write a software engineer resume

1. Lead with impact, not tasks

Hiring managers skim for scale and results. "Built an API serving 3M requests/day" says more than "Worked on backend services".

2. Match the stack in the job post

If the job lists Go and Kubernetes and you use them, make sure those exact words appear in your skills and bullets. Never add a technology you have not actually used.

3. Link to your code

Add GitHub or a portfolio in the header. A pinned project with a clear README often matters as much as a past job title.

4. Keep it to one page under 10 years

Most engineering resumes under 10 years of experience fit on one page. Cut old internships and coursework first.

5. Use a simple single-column layout

Tech companies rely heavily on ATS. Avoid tables, text boxes, skill bars and icons that parsers can misread.

Frequently asked questions

Should a software engineer resume include a summary?

Yes, a 2–3 sentence summary helps, especially if you are changing stacks or seniority. Mention your years of experience, core languages and one measurable achievement.

How do I write a software engineer resume with no experience?

Put projects first: describe 2–3 substantial projects with the problem, tech stack and results (users, performance, stars). Add internships, hackathons, open-source contributions and relevant coursework.

Should I list every programming language I know?

No. List languages you could be interviewed on, ordered by strength and relevance to the job. A focused list looks more credible than a long one.

Is a two-page software engineer resume okay?

For 10+ years of experience or staff-level roles, two pages are acceptable. Otherwise, keep it to one page.
