How to write a financial analyst resume

1. Show the scale of what you analyze

Mention budget sizes, revenue or the number of departments you support so recruiters understand your scope.

2. Connect analysis to decisions

Explain what your models led to, such as savings found, pricing changes or better forecast accuracy.

3. Be precise and accurate

Finance resumes are read by detail-focused people. Check every number, date and title, and use only figures you can explain in an interview.

4. List credentials correctly

For designations like the CFA, write the exact status, for example "CFA Level II Candidate". Only use "CFA" after your name if you are a charterholder.

5. Highlight your Excel and systems skills

Name specific skills such as financial modeling, pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH or Power Query, and the ERP and planning tools you use.

Frequently asked questions

What should a financial analyst resume include?

A summary, technical skills, and experience with budgeting, forecasting, modeling and measurable impact, plus your degree and any finance certifications or exam progress.

How do I write a financial analyst resume with no experience?

Feature internships, finance coursework, case competitions and personal modeling projects. Describe the analysis you did and what it showed.

Is the CFA necessary for financial analysts?

No. It is valued in investment roles, but many corporate FP&A analysts succeed without it. Experience and strong modeling skills often matter more.

What is the difference between a financial analyst and an accountant?

Accountants record and report past financial activity, while financial analysts use that data to plan, forecast and support future decisions.
