How to write a registered nurse resume
1. Put your license near the top
List your RN license with the state, and note a multistate (compact) license if you hold one. Include the license number only if the employer asks for it, and never list a license that is pending or lapsed as active.
2. List certifications only if they are current
Add BLS, ACLS, PALS or specialty certifications such as CCRN only if they are valid right now. If one is in progress, say so clearly.
3. Name your units and patient load
Recruiters want to know where you worked and how many patients you cared for. Mention the unit type, bed count and typical ratio.
4. New grads: feature clinical rotations
If you are newly licensed, list clinical rotations and your capstone with the unit and hours, just like work experience.
5. Include the EHR systems you use
Many hospitals filter for Epic or Cerner experience. List the systems you have actually charted in.

Frequently asked questions
How should I list my RN license on a resume?
Create a "Licenses & Certifications" section with "Registered Nurse (RN), [State]" and note multistate status if applicable. Add the license number only when the application requests it.
Can I apply for RN jobs before passing the NCLEX-RN?
Some hospitals hire new graduates before licensure for graduate nurse roles. State clearly that you are scheduled to take or awaiting NCLEX-RN results, and do not list yourself as an RN until you are licensed.
Should a nursing resume be one or two pages?
New graduates and nurses with a few years of experience usually fit on one page. Experienced nurses with several units, leadership roles or certifications can use two.
What skills should a registered nurse resume include?
Clinical skills such as assessment, medication administration, IV therapy and EHR documentation, plus soft skills like communication, critical thinking and teamwork.
